Road Maintenace Tech – Job Description

JOB TITLE:     ROAD MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN  
FLSA STATUS:         Non-Exempt                                                                

JOB SUMMARY: Reporting to the Foreman, position is manual, semi-skilled work in the construction, maintenance and repair of County properties. Employees in this position perform a variety of labor tasks requiring some job-acquired skills in a specialized field. Duties are routine, but are normally performed with some degree of independence. Assignments and supervision are received from a superior and work is evaluated thought results and on-the-job inspections.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

The following statements describe the principal functions of this job and its scope of responsibility, but should not be considered an all-inclusive listing of work requirements.  Individuals may perform other duties as assigned, including working in other functional areas to cover absences or relief, to equalize peak work periods or otherwise to balance the work load.

  • Performs maintenance and repair duties; acts as working leader of a small labor crew
  • Cleans ditches; controls growth of weeds in drainage areas
  • Works in trenches or excavations which are filled with water; performs heavy pipe-laying duties
  • Under supervision, serves as a light construction equipment operator; sets up and operates pumps, compressors and generators
  • Makes inspections and keeps basic records
  • Lubricates, services and makes minor inspections to vehicles in a shop or field
  • Operates various automotive vehicles, trucks, tractors, loaders and other mechanized equipment
  • Performs related work as required
  • Performs all other duties as assigned

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Working knowledge of tools methods and materials of general maintenance work
  • Considerable knowledge of methods and tools used in cement finishing and block laying
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
  • Ability to efficiently direct a small labor crew
  • Ability to recognize safety hazards in the work involved
  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods under adverse weather conditions

QUALIFICATIONS, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

REQUIRED:

  • Must be able to obtain a valid Class A CDL within six (6) months of hire date

PREFERRED:

  • One year’s experience as a Road Maintenance Helper
  • Two years of experience in construction, maintenance or general repair work
  • Any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the knowledge needed to perform the essential functions of the position

The following physical activities are necessary to perform one or more essential functions of this position.   • Sits or stands long periods of time.
  • Work is performed outdoors with exposure to inclement weather.
  • Moderate physical demands; strength sufficient to lift and move items weighing up to seventy five (75) pounds; may be exposed to safety hazards and dangerous tools and equipment.
  • Grasps, turns, and manipulates objects of varying size and weight; requiring fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination.
  • Moves, lifts, carries, and places objects weighing up to 100 pounds without assistance.
  • Travel between locations to effectively address the business needs of the department.
